Who won the bragging rights at the FUW's rural forum?

IT promised to be an intriguing battle of conflicting political ideologies. The FUW’s big rural forum at Coleg Llysfasi was a fascinating event, but if we were expecting political fireworks, we were sadly disappointed.

Are wind turbines sending sheep bonkers?

ANIMAL rights campaigner Judi Hewitt cannot be faulted for the zeal with which she pursues animal welfares issues.
However her latest claims have raised one or two eyebrows: that hill sheep are being driven to distraction by the sound of wind turbines.

No news today - apart from Anglesey's new milk bottling plant

MUST bite my tongue. Must be professional. It’s happened before and it’ll happen again. Keep repeating to myself: “It’s not the sub’s fault, it’s not the sub’s fault.”

Foot-and-mouth: Cock-up or conspiracy?

AT this time of year it has become traditional to review a landmark in recent UK rural history: the outbreak of foot-and-mouth (FMD).
For all its impact at the time, the 2001 FMD disaster has faded from collective memories. I was only reminded of it at the weekend when the BBC launched its new Conspiracy Files series: the first programme dealt with 9/11, and ensuing episodes will look at the Oklahoma bombing and the death of government scientist David Kelly.

Great idea - but will "milk in a bag" succeed?

IT’S one of those ideas that seems so blindingly obvious, it makes you wonder why it hasn’t been done before.

Double standards pervade intensive poultry production

RECEIVED an interesting letter from Dr Chris Ashton, a retired teacher and waterfowl smallholder from Hope, near Welshpool.
She’s been a long-term advocate of vaccination policies, and is on a DEFRA bird flu stakeholders’ group. So her views on the government’s handling of the Bernard Matthews outbreak in Suffolk need to be taken seriously.

Is it time we challenged climate change theories?

COULDN’T help but smile at climate change comments made by the hapless Rhodri Morgan .
Addressing businessmen at the Senedd yesterday, the First Minister said global warming would “hardly be unhelpful” to the Welsh economy as it would give Wales a Spanish or Californian climate.

Snow lovers deserve a good sledging

LIKE countless others, we took advantage of the recent snow to go sledging in a nearby farm field.
Great fun was had by all. Except for the local farmer, I imagine.

Out of Africa - how the Welsh Blacks helped a little boy from Ghana

EIGHT years ago staff in the Welsh Black Cattle Society offices in Caernarfon received a begging letter from a little African village boy in Ghana, West Africa.
How did he get their address, they wondered. And why them?
This is his remarkable story.

Last stand in bloody battle for the Welsh uplands

IN 48 hours time a group of AMs will decide the future of rural Wales. An exaggeration? Possibly, but make no bones about it, decisions made by Assembly politicians on Wednesday will have far-reaching implications for the Welsh uplands.
