AT this time of year it has become traditional to review a landmark in recent UK rural history: the outbreak of foot-and-mouth (FMD).

RECEIVED an interesting letter from Dr Chris Ashton, a retired teacher and waterfowl smallholder from Hope, near Welshpool.
She’s been a long-term advocate of vaccination policies, and is on a DEFRA bird flu stakeholders’ group. So her views on the government’s handling of the Bernard Matthews outbreak in Suffolk need to be taken seriously.
